Today we learned about how women in the DRC are treated. We were told to make up questions from the article. All of our questions asked why women were being treated unequally in the DRC. This topic really worries me because i can imagine my my family in this situation. It makes me sad because these women have no where to go. So in a way they have to live with being raped on a daily basis. It's like they have nowhere to turn because the feel like they have to stay in the DRC.
I believe that if i were to write a paper on this i would have a very strong opinion on it. It would focus on answering why this was happening, and trying to find a solution to fix it or at least help. I would also want somebody to read this so that they can help fund my effects to stop the rapings and senseless killings that happen in the DRC.
To me i hear about this situation too many times in different society's. This happens because some men get it in their heads that they are superior(something which is higher in a hierarchical structure of any kind) to women and can do what ever to them. in countries like the DRC most of the abuse is done physical, but back home the abuse is done mentally. Society tells women that they will never be better than a man. That a wrong way to look at things, because in my eyes all people are equal. I do also feel that the United States is getting better with their prejudice toward women.

ReplyDeleteI know you chose to write your portfolio about football - but if you're interested in learning more about the DRC and women's opportunities, here are a few resources:
* www.CongoWomen.org (where the essays in class are from)
* Friends of the Congo - a DC-based organization that tries to share information and help solve problems in DRC
* Change.org - a site kind of like Facebook that connects people who are passionate about tons of things (including the DRC and women)
I completely agree that the world has some serious work to do when it comes to recognizing women as complete people with dignity. I appreciate your post and I'll look forward to more reflections on future material.
Let me know if you think it's a good idea to bring in more about the DRC for some of our work on the Traits.

ReplyDeleteYou were on fire in class today! I loved how engaged you were with organizing a potential essay on women in the DRC. Your brought your passion to the topic, and you showed great critical thinking in organizing (and even editing) an essay.
You also impressed me with your willingness to jump right into poetry. I look forward to seeing your notes and thoughts on a poem like 'Still I Rise' about the football season.
Some food for thought:
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'm not sure what the assignment was for this passage I would be very interested to hear more from you about Word Choice and Voice regarding treatment of women in the DRC. When you discuss the way society can shape behavior towards women I'd like you to think about all the words that we use for women, with women and about women in the DRC. What kind of language do we use in our own society for females? Are there any similarities?
